and that the struggle over hellenization was also a power struggle between upper-class factions. Political unrest in Judea was a problem to Antiochus. He needed a stable and loyal Judea, for the area could too easily slip through his fingers. He knew that part of what the Jews were fighting over was Torah, and may have thought that if he eliminated Torah, this would help pacify Judea. He may even have thought that his Jewish allies, those who wanted hellenization in the first place, would approve.
